OUR WINES

With one of the pre-eminent vine nurseries in the southern hemisphere and 3 different growing regions from which to cultivate their blends, the Bosman Family Vineyards have unrivalled access, knowledge, and expertise when it comes to crafting their wines. A strict selection process in the vineyard and the cellar means that only the top 5% of the total harvest is used for production. While historic vines offer distinct vintages, a thriving vine garden allows for constant innovation and the perfect blend of old and new.

ADAMA WHITE 2015
“The Adama blend is named after Adam Appollis, a visionary of his time and the forefather of many of the families that work and live on the farm today. I am the 5th generation Appollis and I am proud of the results of my family and the Bosman family`s joint efforts…”
– Rita Andreas, former director and HR manager of Bosman Adama Pty Ltd.

The coin at BFV has two sides. The one being the history and heritage part which tells about our deep routed knowledge of the industry. The other side is where we strive, through research and development, to create new and exciting wines. The Adama White Blend is firmly nestled in this range as we use interesting blends and components as well as modern tannin management and oaking theories. It is made however to be an authentic rendition of elegant, modern winemaking. It also makes for a complementary harlequin twin to the Adama Red blend which has become known and loved by its followers.

OPTENHORST CHENIN BLANC 2015
“He asked me if I knew about the old vineyard which was in the line-up for uprooting. I replied no. I think he also then realised that we needed to rethink this. Later that morning we stood in the Optenhorst Vineyard. Three months later we tasted the wine from the barrel…we were speechless.”
– Corlea Fourie (winemaker) on how the Bosman love affair with Chenin Blanc started in 2007.

The Optenhorst Chenin Blanc features in our Special Vineyard Selection – those wines which speak of a place where it is rooted. In this Chenin Blanc`s case it has been rooted in a specific site since 1952. In 2010 the Chenin Blanc Association funded research into the old vineyards of the Cape. It turned out the Optenhorst vineyard is the fourth oldest in the country. We believe that Wellington and indeed the Bovlei Valley will one day be renowned for the quality of its Chenin and the longevity thereof. We also believe that Optenhorst will lead the way.

BO-VALLEI CHENIN BLANC 2016
The Bo-Vallei, which is located on the outskirts of Wellington towards Bain’s kloof, has been our home for more than two centuries and our legacy of vines and wine is woven into the fabric of its history. This beautiful, small and undiscovered valley is surrounded by the Hawekwa mountains, Limiet mountains and the Groenberg and located some 70km from Cape Town. With a backdrop of beautiful landscapes, it has a magical atmosphere that will captivate you once you discover it.

Originally our home town Wellington was known as Limiet Vallei (border or frontier valley). The area became known as Wagenmakersvallei (Valley of the Wagon Makers) towards the end of the 17th century when the French Huguenots settled here. Our farms situated in this valley are extremely well suited for the cultivation of Chenin Blanc. Sunny days, well drained soils and slopes which forms a myriad of micro pockets all lends itself to making wines with an abundance of fruit and appeal.

SKIN CONTACT PINOT GRIS 2016 | Wine Club Selection
“A wine variety which has gained international success mostly because of its refreshing, vibrant notes. The trend has evolved though. We are seeing more and more Pinot Gris in a more serious style and made to accompany lovely meals.”
– Corlea Fourie – winemaker

Pinot Gris (also called Pinot Grigio – Grigio is Italian, Gris referring to the French usage) is the white, well-travelled offspring of the black Pinot Noir grape. The French translation of ‘gris’ is pine-cone grey, and these greyish-blue bunches of grapes are appropriately shaped like pine cones. The crucial step with Pinot Gris is to adopt a slight touch once the grapes reach the cellar so that a white (not pink) wine results.

Maturation: 2 – 10 years.

SEMILLON 2015 | Wine Club Selection
Sèmillon is a great variety most notably grown in France and Australia. The appeal of the wine lies in a flavour profile which is closer to the fashionable Sauvignon Blanc and a textural profile close to that of Chardonnay. In Bordeaux it is one of the three permitted varieties together with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Sèmillon is also very well known as the variety used in the world renowned sweet and botrytised wines of Sauternes.

The Sèmillons in the Australian Hunter Valley has become a point of distinction for this wine producing country. Sèmillon, or “wyndruif” as it was known in South Africa accounted for 90% of all vineyards locally in the 1820`s. The devastation of the phylloxera epidemic was probably the beginning of the end: Sèmillon has never recovered as a wider selection of more “fashionable” cultivars became available.

The bright green leaves of the vine earned Sèmillon another nickname: groendruif or “green grape”. Bunches tend to be medium to large and although typically a rich yellow when ripe, in cooler climates like that of the Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, the thin skinned berries can easily suffer from sunburn which gives them an amber to pinkish hue.

Origin: De Bos farm, Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde-Valley.

Varietal: Sémillon

FIDES GRENACHE BLANC 2015
“Romans described fides as a command to trust. In grafting vines and winemaking, a relationship like this is always present between soil, climate and the people. As we believe in these relationships, it is a fitting name for the expression of our pursuit in making wines in a natural and original way.”
– Corlea Fourie, Winemaker.

What would you as a winemaker want to make; want to be involved in? This wine, a natural fermented, skin macerated white wine, was the answer. The grape in question is Grenache Blanc. Planted on our decomposed granite soils as bush vines it seemed to be an obvious choice. What resulted was a wine with a beautiful natural texture – a fine tannin backbone – which added a very distinct dimension to the wine. Our hope is that you will follow us with this project and discover some fantastic new attributes to wines you didn`t know of before.

Wines that give us a creative outlet in terms of interesting winemaking, blending and innovation. Be prepared to be intrigued.
ADAMA RED 2016
“The Adama blend is named after Adam Appollis, a visionary of his time and the forefather of many of the families that work and live on the farm today. I am the 5th generation Appollis and I am proud of the results of my family and the Bosman family’s joint efforts…”
– Rita Andreas, director and former HR manager of Bosman Adama Pty Ltd.

At Bosman Family Vineyards we have three points of interest which are very important to mention. One being the history and heritage which tells about our deep rooted knowledge of the industry. Secondly is where we strive through innovation and development to create new and exciting wines. The last point has to do with sustainability which is incorporated by our Fairtrade efforts and accreditation. The Adama Red Blend is firmly nestled in this range as we use interesting blends and components as well as modern tannin management theories. It is made however to be an authentic rendition of elegant, modern winemaking and truthful to the families to which it plays homage.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013

“My Grandfather, Petrus Bosman, always spoke of the success he had with blending the wines of his time which was mainly Hermitage/Cinsaut with the relatively new Cabernet Sauvignon from the “Kabinet blok” (so named by the workers). He was convinced that the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bovlei vineyards could lift the quality of the whole harvest…”
– 8th generation Petrus Bosman on the heritage of Cabernet Sauvignon on the Bosman Adama farms.

We utilize Cabernet Sauvignon from 3 different vineyards and slopes, to create a blend of different components. This lends itself to creating a wine which is complex by virtue because of the variety of our resources. Our vineyards lie in the shadow of the Limiet Mountain range on the south facing slopes of Green mountain which brings forth less direct sunlight. Vineyards which, because of the effect of south-easterly winds in early summer and south-westerly winds in late summer, give us smaller berries and a gentler ripening period.

PINOTAGE 2014
“If you’ve worked with vines your whole life you get to know the exceptional ones from the good ones. It’s like with every other craft – one’s eyes becomes trained. I saw a specific batch of Pinotage in our nursery and it was evident that we needed to plant them on our estate. That was in the year 1994…”
Jannie Bosman, Seventh generation estate owner.

Now, 22 years later, this Pinotage vineyard has proven itself to consistently produce fruit that forms the basis of award winning wines. We conceptualized what we wanted to achieve with it and started to apply our dreams in 2008. The aim always being to produce a world class wine. A wine Abraham Izak Perold, descendant of Wellington and the progenitor of Pinotage as a cultivar, would be proud of.

ERFENIS 2014
“The ideal has always been to create a wine, if possible in a certain vintage, that encompasses the essence of that vintage. It should show off the very best wines of that year in one exclusive blend…”
– Corlea Fourie, Winemaker.

Every year when tasting through the barrels one is confronted by a few barrels that just stand out. Within any group of barrels there is usually that one wine that just shows its colours best. It is also not always within the same cultivar group. We would like to think that the vintage decides the odds of the blend. The winemaker only picks the best of what is available. The blend evolved through multiple blending exercises and is a true reflection of our ode to harvest 2011.

NERO D’AVOLA 2015
The story of Nero d`Avola and our love for it started in 2004 when the first plant material came to South Africa. After 2 years in quarantine only two vines survived from which material was propagated and taken to Vititec to be tested and cleaned of viruses. At Bosman the cleaned material was then used in an experimental vineyard where it was grafted onto established Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

Subsequently we have planted a Nero D`Avola vineyard on one of our Bovlei estates. It is also the vineyard which Petrus, Carla and their sons harvest every year as part of a new family tradition. With notes which shows that it tends to lean more to spiciness, deep purple prune and candied fruit –we use second and third fill barrels to keep these notes as pure as possible –and not masked by unnecessary oakyness.

The 2013 bottled wine was tasted by the Wine and Spirits Board in February 2014 and approved by a special advisory board. Nero d`Avola is now approved as a wine grape and the approval was published after much anticipation in the government gazette. Until now, labelling this bottle as such was not permitted. We lovingly referred to it as the red tape grape in our cellar because of this. Now in 2015, our efforts have been rewarded and the 2014 vintage will proudly bear the first Nero d`Avola name in South Africa.

TWYFELING CINSAUT 2015
“The renaissance of Cinsaut is apon us. I would be quite proud if we could reclaim it as a South African viticulture heritage and I hope this wine will help pave the way”.
– Corlea Fourie – winemaker

The previous generation farmed Cinsaut with pleasure. Usually in bush vine form, these vines were not so susceptible to wind damage and crops were good. Then Cinsaut became obscure in the sense that new varieties became more common in South Africa such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (varieties that made France and Australia famous). Modern winemaking also introduced oak (and lots of it) which didn’t do much for Cinsaut. At this stage Cinsaut was not being recognized as one of the classical varieties and was therefore demoted in the use of making blends…better. In blends it found its home. So the red workhorse of the South African wine industry, namely Cinsaut, stayed mostly anonymous up until recent history.

“After an Italian POW drowned in a dam on Lelienfontein it was fitting that we would use the Sicilian Primitivo planted around it, to make a sweet commemorative wine which tells of the poignant history of these prisoners and their influence in Wellington during the second world war…”
– Jannie Bosman on the history behind the Lelienfontein Primitivo vineyard.

A grape variety which shows of lovely fruit and spiciness, together with the method of desiccating in the vineyard, gives for a lovely naturally sweet desert wine. De Bos Walker Bay 47 Varietal Rosé 2015
“We harvest the grapes for the Rose just like my Mom would go into the garden to scout for the most beautiful roses for that day to put together the prettiest bouquet possible…”
– Eighth generation Petrus Bosman, MD Bosman Family Vineyards, on how the decision is made when to harvest the Rose.

Today Lelienfontein vine growers is the largest single vine nursery in Africa with a wide spectrum vitis cultivars for the production of superb quality wine, table and raisin grapes. The plant material from which they supply the industry comes from different locations –one being the De Bos farm in the Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde valley, Hermanus.

Here, from the Vine garden, grapes are picked with the serious intent to make a Rosé. The De Bos Rose thus not a by-product of red wine fermentation but is made from the onset to display a naturally lower alcohol and a freshness because of natural acidity.

DE BOS HANDPICKED CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2015

– Petrus Bosman – MD of Bosman Family Vineyards

Our farms in the Bovlei valley are extremely well suited to cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon. Sunny days and an early season do well for giving the vines ample time to ripen the grapes. Well drained soils and slopes which form a myriad of micro pockets from the basis of interesting terroir variations in each component of the wine.

With our De Bos range the focus is on delivering wines which are true to our community and cultivar roots. With the Cabernet Sauvignon that translates into producing a wine with elegance, finesse and beautiful vibrant fruit flavours.
