OUR WINES

With one of the pre-eminent vine nurseries in the southern hemisphere and 3 different growing regions from which to cultivate their blends, the Bosman Family Vineyards have unrivalled access, knowledge, and expertise when it comes to crafting their wines. A strict selection process in the vineyard and the cellar means that only the top 5% of the total harvest is used for production. While historic vines offer distinct vintages, a thriving vine garden allows for constant innovation and the perfect blend of old and new.

– Rita Andreas, Chairman of the Adama Workers Trust.

OPTENHORST CHENIN BLANC 2016

In 2008, Corlea’s maiden vintage on the farm, an old Chenin vineyard was due to be uprooted: It was very old and “haasbek” (literally gap-toothed as some of the vines in the rows had died). But something caught our attention at the last minute and we decided to try and make a wine out of these vines just one last time. That was the Optenhorst Chenin Blanc, and needless to say we were astounded, and greatly relieved, that we had not pulled out this star-studded gem.

This vineyard was planted in 1952, making it the third oldest Chenin vineyard in the country. Its age has contributed to its restrained complexity and soft mouth-feel though it carries the succulent fruit and lively minerality of much younger wine. The grand dame of Chenins.

Origin: Optenhorst farm, Wellington.
Maturation: 2- 10 years.
Varietal: Chenin Blanc.
Alc: 13.01%
R/Sugar: 2.5 g/l

Varietal: 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
Alc: 13.11% VOL

UPPER HEMEL EN AARDE CHARDONNAY 2017

You don’t have to be a Chanel-clad clubhouse member to love Chardonnay. Why?

Because Chardonnay is the most diverse and most planted white wine grape in the world. The smell of vanilla, butter and crème brûlée are all attributes of the subtle French oak-aging. However, the texture that our Chardonnay has can be described as creamy, smooth and waxy. This is due to a special kind of fermentation called Malolactic Fermentation, resulting in a softer acidity and fruit flavours with a buttery mouthfeel.

Origin: Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley, South Africa.
Maturation:1 – 5 years.
Varietal: 100% Chardonnay.
Alc: 13.93% VOL
R/Sugar: 2.5 g/l
TA: 5.8 g/l
pH: 3.31

Generation 8 Chenin Blanc 2018

This is the wine our family enjoys with a week night supper of a relaxed Saturday braai (barbecue). It is accessible and compatible with an array of dishes and occasions though hardly a compromise on quality.

Wellington seems to provide the ideal terroir for Chenin and this wine is no exception. Grapes picked from vineyards both old and young, and planted on various slopes with varied aspects come together to create an appealing, fruity wine with added complexity from time spent on the lees.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 1 – 5 years.
Varietal: 100%Chenin Blanc.
Alc: 12.0% VOL

WEISSER RIESLING 2018 | Wine Club Selection

In the spirit of innovation and throughout the history of the Bosman Wine Club, we have released a limited addition of the Weisser Riesling which makes up a collection of wines exclusively for our members.

In South Africa we still tend to label our wines Weisser or Rhine Riesling to distinguish them from the Cape Riesling, which isn’t actually Riesling at all. Riesling originated on the banks of the Rhine in Germany and so our vineyards in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde provide similar cool terroir to favour this aromatic varietal.

Origin: Upper hemel-en-Aarde Valley, South Africa.a.
Maturation: 1 – 2 years.
Varietal: 100% Weisser Riesling.
Alc: 13.0% VOL

VIOGNIER 2016 | WINE CLUB SELECTION

Members of the Bosman Wine Club enjoy access to an exclusive range of limited release wines. The Viognier has been a regular for years now.

In 2016, when we were making up the blend for the Adama white wine, two barrels of Viognier just stood out from the rest. So we just had to bottle them separately.

Pronunciation: “Vee-own-yay”

Origin: De Bos farm, Upper-Hemel-en-Aarde-Valley.
Maturation: 1- 5 years (especially in terms of the natural low pH and fresh acidity).
Varietal: Sémillon
Alc: 13.11%
R/Sugar: 2.9 g/l
TA: 8.0 g/l
pH: 3.13
We are blessed to have truly remarkable wine enthusiasts as members of our Bosman Family Wine Club. With this wine we salute them for appreciating the finer things in life and thank them for always motivating us in our pursuit of excellence. Note: Wine Club selection is exclusive to Bosman Wine Club members.
FIDES GRENACHE BLANC 2016

For Winemaker Corlea Fourie, winemaking is a careful balancing act between nurturing the soil, the vines and the wines; and exploring new and better ways of doing things in order to create something special, but with the same standard of excellence we have come to trust.

Fides is a shining example of this tightrope twirl. It is a naturally fermented, skin macerated white wine which is orange in colour due to the time spent on the skins and pips. This is a 6000 year old tradition that originates in Georgia and Northern Italy, but is currently bang on trend globally.

This wine, made from Grenache Blanc, is a rich and robust wine with complex texture and flavour, and next-level fruit maturation.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 3 – 7 years.
Varietal: 100% Grenache Blanc
Alc: 14.2% VOL

Generation 8 Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Cabernet and the Bovlei, where the vineyard is situated, are a match made in heaven. Sunny days and an early ripening season give the grapes ample time to reach phenolic ripeness; and well-drained soils with various aspects create interesting components which are blended artfully into a noble, robust wine.

This wine is a classical rendition of the king of wines: elegant with vibrant fruit and a memorable finish.

ADAMA RED 2017

“Ignoring for a second that I enjoyed a Penfolds Grange 1993 and Chateau Pichon Lalande 1970 on Friday; my red of the weekend has been the Adama by Bosman wines.” @grapecrusader

The components are all vinified separately, with the Shiraz and Mourvedre being aged in new American oak and the rest matured in French oak barrels. It is then blended together to create an authentic rendition of elegant, modern winemaking but remains truthful to the families to which it pays homage.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 3- 7 years.
Varietals: Shiraz, Mourvedre, Cinsaut, Grenache Noir, Primitivo, Viognier, Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013

“My Grandfather, Petrus Bosman, always spoke of the success he had with blending the wines of his time which was mainly Hermitage/Cinsaut with the relatively new Cabernet Sauvignon from the “Kabinet blok” (so named by the workers). He was convinced that the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon form the Bovlei vineyards could lift the quality of the whole harvest…”

– Petrus Bosman, MD of Bosman Adama Pty (Ltd) and 8th generation Bosman.

We utilize Cabernet Sauvignon from 3 different vineyards and slopes, to create a blend of different components. This lends itself to creating a wine which is complex by virtue because of the variety of our resources.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 5 – 7 years.
Varietal: 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Alc: 13.96% VOL

PINOTAGE 2015

“If you’ve worked with vines your whole life you get to know the exceptional ones from the good ones. It’s like with every other craft – one’s eyes becomes trained. I saw a specific batch of Pinotage in our nursery and it was evident that we needed to plant them on our estate. That was in the year 1994…”

– Jannie Bosman, Seventh generation estate owner.

Now, 25 years later, this Pinotage vineyard has proved itself as a consistent producer of award-winning wines.

ERFENIS 2015

With each vintage there are certain barrels that just stand out. Sometimes blending them together creates something truly exceptional that is worth bottling on its own. This is such a blend. It will only be produced in years where we have reached the benchmark we have set ourselves: a wine worthy of our heritage.

The wine was first produced in 2010 when several babies were born to the Bosman cellar team. We look forward to marking its progress as we watch our children grow.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 7 – 15 years.
Varietal: Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Nero d” Avola, Cinsaut, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
Alc: 14.41% VOL

Generation 8 Merlot 2018

“In breaking leaves just above the fruit zone we were able to let more sunlight in”. Petrus Bosman

We decided to make a project of it in showcasing the very best in bright Merlot fruit from Wellington. We utilised techniques in the vineyard and in the cellar to make this wine as approachable and interesting as possible. Our efforts are well-rewarded in the final product, but the proof is in the drinking.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 2 – 5 years.
Varietal: 100% Merlot.
Alc: 14% VOL
R/Sugar: 3.3 g/l

TWYFELING CINSAUT 2017

“The revival of Cinsaut is upon us. We should claim this varietal as a part of our South African viticultural heritage, so I hope this wine helps pave the way.”

– Corlea Fourie, Winemaker.

Previous generations planted Cinsaut with alacrity. These hardy bush vines could weather wind damage and the yields were excellent. Then it went out of fashion in favour of the Bordeaux and Rhone varieties which produced big, bold wines that were heavily wooded, something the gentle, fruity Cinsaut could not content with.

But recently, this varietal has experienced a renaissance with excellent wines emanating from all corners of the Cape Winelands.

Origin: Wellington, South Africa.
Maturation: 2 – 15 years.
Varietal: 100% Cinsaut.
Alc: 14.1% VOL

UPPER HEMEL EN AARDE PINOT NOIR 2017

Pinot Noir is the most highly prized wine in the world. It’s not as rich or big as its noble cousins, in fact it’s quite the opposite. Pinot Noir wines are pale in colour, and their flavours are very subtle.

Our De Bos estate takes pride of place in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley where our Pinot Noir vineyards are planted. Here, ideal soils, combined with the cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, create wine growing conditions perfect for Pinot Noir.

NERO 2016

Bosman Nero is the first wine to be made from the Sicilian grape Nero d’Avola in South Africa. In an effort to find a grape that would thrive in Wellington’s hot, dry climate, Petrus Bosman brought the Nero cuttings into the country himself, propagated the vines, planted a vineyard and courageously made a wine that would express its Sicilian roots, and also celebrate its new-found African terroir.

The resultant wine is elegant and medium-bodied with fresh berry flavours and a hint of spice.

Origin: Wellington, South-Africa
Maturation: 2 – 10 years.
Varietal: 100% Nero D’Avola

Primitivo Secco 2017 | Wine Club Selection

When making up the blend for the Adama Red, a selection of Primitivo barrels just stood out.

SOET STEEN 2016 | Wine Club Selection

“Wellington was deemed the dried fruit capital of the Cape in the early 1900s. We discovered a few apricot drying racks on a neighbouring farm from that era and decided to dry our Chenin Blanc grapes in the sun in much the same way as the apricots were dried a century ago. This has created rich, concentrated yet succulent wine, packed with fruit flavours yet with enough acidity to yield a memorable, lingering aftertaste.”
